Kit Ebersbach has been making music and friends since his path led him to Hawaiʻi as a piano-playing Yale linguistics graduate, 60 years ago. His CV reads like the musical history of the ensuing decades in Hawaiʻi. At every cultural milestone, Kit has been there, pushing his own creative boundaries while supporting so many of the most important voices of the time with genuine humility, inventive arrangements, and wide-eared playfulness. And yet, somehow, one of Hawaiʻi’s finest producers and instrumentalists has never had his own physical record—until now.

Ala Pōʻai captures two days of virtuosic free improvisation with friends, old and new, stretching the traditional jazz-combo format to accommodate the restless curiosity that drives him. Hawaiian artistry, spiritual and free jazz, gospel and funk, and most recently experimental ambient. It’s all in the mix, guided by a unique musical voice—one shaped by deep listening to ka ʻāina. In his words: Music is sound manipulated by spirit, that’s all it is.
